Hubris, 2024 | Installation View

Hubris explores themes of identity, belonging, and alienation, focusing on how individuals marginalized by society cope with social pressures. "Hubris" traditionally means excessive pride or arrogance leading to disaster. However, in Sarıer’s interpretation, it transcends this classical meaning, becoming a metaphor for resisting societal norms. His work examines how figures confront imposed expectations, and how Sarıer risks alienation in his pursuit of self-expression.

The word “hubris” traces back to Ancient Greece, where it was seen as arrogance born from overconfidence, often punished with severe consequences—particularly against the gods. Mythological figures like Icarus and Prometheus embody this concept, with their boundary-pushing actions ending in tragedy. Yet in Sarıer's Hubris exhibition, the artist reinterprets it as a response to exclusion. His works approach rebellion not as defiance of fate but as a necessary act of survival. For those whose identity—whether based on ethnicity, gender, or sexuality—conflicts with societal norms, resistance becomes a form of reclamation. Sarıer’s pieces celebrate the courage and resilience of marginalized individuals who risk everything to defend their right to exist. Each work in Hubris captures moments of vulnerability and defiance, inviting reflection on how challenging societal norms is not arrogance, but a vital aspect of survival in an exclusionary world.
